Canandaigua, NY native Evan Meccarello is known for fostering new classical music initiatives and serving the community with great music.  He is Founder and Director of the Hochstein Alumni Orchestra (Rochester, NY).  He has led the group in world-premiere performances of Rochester composers and showcased talented musicians in a concert tour of the region.  Members of the orchestra have been winners in international contests, received mention by music critic Alex Ross in The New Yorker magazine, and have gone on to play with professional orchestras like the Fort Worth and Detroit Symphony. The Hochstein Alumni Orchestra was recently featured on WXXI-FM’s Performance Rochester series.

Evan has conducted professional, college, youth, and community musicians.  He is currently Conductor of the Thames Valley Youth Symphony in New London, CT and Assistant Conductor of the Nazareth College Symphony Orchestra.  In December 2016, he conducted The Nutcracker with the Ithaca Ballet and Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra.  Other ensembles he has worked with include the University of Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Youth Symphonic Orchestra, Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra, Berlin-Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra (Berlin, Germany), and the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra.  Evan has been guest conductor and clinician at middle and high schools across the Greater Rochester area.

Evan’s training in conducting has included classes with the most sought-after teachers in America, including Larry Rachleff, Benjamin Zander, and Kenneth Kiesler.  He has had opera conducting training in Verona, Italy and Berlin, Germany.

Evan holds a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting from Bowling Green State University, where he led performances with the university’s Philharmonia, Choral Society, and was music director for a one-act opera with the New Music Ensemble.  He also conducted on the long-running festival of the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music.

As a violinist, Evan has taught private students from age five to fifty-five.  As a soloist, he is developing new music repertoire for unaccompanied violin.  He won Nazareth College’s concerto competition in both first and third years of his undergraduate study.  As a young student he participated in summer festivals in western New York, Killington, VT, Tanglewood, MA, and Spoleto, Italy.  As a chamber musician, he has been a member of the Delmonico String Quartet for nine years.  He enjoys playing regularly at Argentine tango clubs.
