William Satterfield has been an active musician since the age of 6. He began his musical endeavors with the violin, and continued his studies for eleven years before permanently switching to viola. During that time, Satterfield has served as a principal player in over seven orchestras spanning the country. This includes the various orchestras at the ‘Iolani School as well as the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra. Before graduating from Interlochen in 2016, Satterfield’s accomplishments as a violist were already numerous. He played principal viola in the Oahu Civic Orchestra, and participated in multiple quartets. His top orchestral achievement was playing with the Academy Orchestra in the prestigious David Geffen Hall in New York City. In addition to his orchestral accomplishments, Satterfield has been an avid chamber musician and has competed in competitions such as the Saint Paul Chamber Music Competition and Fischoff. He has also played in masterclasses with notable musicians such as Csaba Erdelyi and Ara Gregorian. Apart from playing his instrument, Satterfield has actively pursued conducting. He attended the Chicago Masterclass Conducting Workshop Series three times, first attending at the age of 15. He has also participated in the International Conducting Workshop Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria with Larry Rachleff and Donald Schleicher at the age of 17. Satterfield is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Viola Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He has been studying there with C.J. Chang since 2016.
