The French word "gallant" corresponds to "refined, polite, courteous." The gallant style in music was a transitional phenomenon from the Baroque to Classicism. Sometimes it is compared to the Rococo in painting. In the 18th century the musical texture of Handel and Vivaldi, Cooperin, Telemann and Pergolesi, becomes much more transparent, and music becomes lighter and more sensual. This style can also be traced in neoclassical attempts of Italian and French composers in the 20th century.
For the Academic Chamber Orchestra "Lviv Virtuosos", directed since 1994 by its founder, artistic director and chief conductor, People’s Artist of Ukraine, Serhiy Burko, the gallant style is the most natural implementation of artistic ideas and creative ideals. The orchestra constantly seeks bright personalities as soloists for whom the gallant style is natural in their musical expression. The collaboration of "Lviv Virtuosos" with organist Olena Matselyukh has both its own history and a promising future.
