This event continues a series of literary events by the PEN Ukraine “Between the Sirens”.
Its title combines different meanings and associations. Sirens are loudspeakers of air raid alarms, a symbol of war, which has become part of our daily lives, filling the space throughout day and night. In the metaphorical and poetic sense, sirens are ancient Greek mythological creatures that represent danger and a fatal choice. Today, this metaphor is more appropriate than ever, because Russia’s war against our country forces us to choose and make difficult decisions almost daily.
“Between the Sirens” will be arranged in two formats: for listeners in the Lyudkevych Concert Hall and online broadcasting on the YouTube channel of the Lviv National Philharmonic. Six poets and one musician will perform on the same stage to remind us of the art’s power for healing and uniting during the most difficult times.
Attending a live concert means showing a support gesture to Ukrainian artists who talk about the war and reflect on our present being. This is a rare opportunity to listen to contemporary works for double bass. To express your gratitude and feel your own involvement in the cultural front’s struggles.
During the event, Ostap Slyvynsky, Maryana Savka, Julia Musakovska, Kateryna Mikhalitsyna, Rostyslav Kuzyk, and Sophia Lenartovych will read their new poems written throughout the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war.
Double bassist Nazar Stets (Kyiv) will perform a musical program of works by the contemporary composers Hauta-aho, Kravchuk, Zbinden, Scodanibbio and Ellis. The performer will also improvise while reading poetry.
