On November 18, 2024, the AMUZ invites chamber music enthusiasts to a concert that promises to be a heart-warming experience. This special evening celebrates the 130th birthday of Borys Lyatoshynskyi, one of the most significant Ukrainian composers of the 20th century. Alongside Lyatoshynskyi’s work, two other extraordinary piano quintets will be performed, representing European music tradition’s rich and complex heritage.
The concert opens with Robert Schumann’s groundbreaking Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44, which is regarded as a milestone in romantic chamber music. Following this, the Piano Quintet in G minor by Ukrainian composer Vasyl Barvinskyi will be performed. His compositional work, which occasionally shows influences of Impressionism, is often based on Ukrainian folk melodies and contains elements of Minimalism. The evening culminates with the Piano Quintet Op. 42, by Borys Lyatoshynskyi. Composed in 1942 under the difficult evacuation conditions, the work reflects the composer’s nostalgia and longing for his homeland. Lyatoshynskyj’s masterpiece is characterized by deep emotional intensity and technical perfection, making it one of the most significant chamber music works of the 20th century.
The “Phoenix” ensemble and pianist Violina Petrychenko will perform these works with a profound connection to the historical and cultural significance of the music. Allow yourself to be transported into the fascinating world of European and Ukrainian chamber music.
