Two towering figures of Ukrainian academic music come together in one concert — the power of symphonic and choral sound, the voice of an individual confronting the vastness of the world, and the dialogue between classical forms and a contemporary musical language. This evening is dedicated to Myroslav Skoryk and Yevhen Stankovych — two masters whose distinctive styles and profound messages will captivate every listener. The concert features the Lviv premiere of Stankovych’s large-scale Requiem and Skoryk’s Violin Concerto No. 2.
The Requiem — the ultimate funeral mass — is a meeting point of life and death, where the soul seeks catharsis. In Stankovych’s interpretation, the genre resonates with today’s challenges and timeless human longing for peace, echoing the spiritual depth once explored by Mozart, Verdi, Silvestrov, and Shchetynsky.
Under the baton of Keri-Lynn Wilson, featuring soloists Olena Skitsko, Volodymyr Shynkarenko, the Halytsky Chamber Choir, and the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Lviv National Philharmonic, the performance unfolds as a profound meditation on existence.
Through the canonical structure of the requiem — from Requiem aeternam to the eleventh movement, Agnus Dei — the performers will embark on a journey into eternity, intertwining the present, the past, and the future in the multifaceted sound world of a contemporary composer.
The concert will also feature Myroslav Skoryk’s Violin Concerto No. 2 — a mature work written in 1990, performed by the brilliant violinist Bohdana Pivnenko with the Lviv National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
A dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra becomes a metaphor for the human struggle within a dissonant reality — a search for meaning through vivid contrasts, freedom of expression, and thematic unity. Skoryk’s music astonishes with its freshness, precision, and emotional depth, combining clarity of form with virtuosity and color.
