The concert programme presents three different perspectives on the piano: from Schubert’s intimate, chamber-like concentration to Chopin’s dramatic intensity and the monumental scope of Bach’s Chaconne in Brahms’s transcription.
Schubert’s four Impromptus open the programme — works in which the simplicity of the musical language is combined with constantly shifting moods and underlying tension. They are followed by the Chaconne from Bach’s Second Partita in Johannes Brahms’s version for the left hand — a distinctive interpretation of one of Bach’s most renowned works. The programme concludes with Frédéric Chopin’s Fourth Ballade, a large-scale work in which lyricism gradually gives way to a dramatic finale.
