The Lviv Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra has existed for more than two centuries and is associated with such famous names as Józef Elsner, Franz Xaver Mozart, Karol Lipinski, Jozef Baschny, Karol Mikuli, Mieczyslaw and Adam Soltys, Ludwik Czelański, Henryk Jarecki, and Henryk Melcer-Szczawinski. In the early twentieth century, the orchestra has given performances under such guest conductors as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Ruggero Leoncavallo.
In 1933, the orchestra became incorporated as the Philharmonic Orchestra. The conductors who worked with the orchestra in this period include Adam Soltys, Jacob Mund, Jerzy Kolaczkowski, and Stefan Sledzinski as well as Kazimierz Wilkomirski, Tadeusz Mazurkiewicz, Hermann Scherchen, Ignaz Neumark, Jascha Horenstein, and Grzegorz Fitelberg. In December 1939, the new Soviet government “reestablished” the Symphony Orchestra. It was led for many years by Isaac Pain and Mykola Kolessa.
Throughout the following decades the Lviv Phiharmonic Orchestra Music Directors included D. Pelekhatyy, Y. Lutsiv, R. Fylypchuk, J. Kolessa, I. Yuzyuk, A. Torybaev, and I. Stupel. The orchestra collaborated with such guest conductors and artists as G. Rozhdestvensky, R. Glier, N. Anosov, B. D Astoli, A. Baltis, A. Gauk, L. Ginsburg, B. Dvarionas, V. Dudarova, G. Earl, S. Kamartin, J. Kakhidze, M. Katz, K. Kondrashin, K. Moral, Ye. Mravinsky, G. Octors, M. Pokrovsky, M. Popescu, R. Revakovych, K. Simeonov, V. Syrenko, M. Diadiura, N. Gutman, K. Karabitz, S. Sondeckis, S. Turchak, M. Jansons, D. Oistrach, S. Richter, G. Jaskulski, R. Kofman, F. Mansurov, P. Hulke, T. Sanderling, and many others.
The orchestra regularly participates in international festivals, including the International Festival of Musical Art “Virtuosos”, the International Contemporary Music Festival “Contrasts”, Beethoven evenings, International Festival “Discovering Paderewski, and others. The Lviv Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra is one of the largest orchestras in Ukraine, and is well known far beyond its borders. Today, the orchestra successfully tours in such European countries as Poland, Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands.
Іn 2006, the Lviv Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra was awarded the “Academic” honorary title. In summer of 2016, after exhaustive search, Taras Krysa was appointed as the Music and Artistic Director of the Lviv Philharmonic.
