Program

For a conductor, composing Requiem or Mess is always a special mission since one has to touch the deepest spiritual and philosophical spheres by means of music. Alongside, the stimulus for composing such a piece is quite often lies in a composer’s profound personal experience.

Verdi was composing his Requiem with certain people in mind – his late contemporaries – whom he wanted to build the worthy music monument. Those people were: composer Gioachino Rossini and writer Alessandro Manzoni.

And, without any doubt, he succeeded in doing so – Requiem is considered to be one of his most sublime pieces. The bright feature of the music in this piece is a rich and dynamic dramaturgy, more characteristic of the opera music than of the church one: here you can find both moments of the deepest tragedy and the highest enlightenment, and 90 minutes of music is perceived in one breath.
