The American adaptation of Shakespeare’s tale of the forbidden love of Romeo and Juliet – “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein became one of the symbols of Broadway in the 20th century. It was this musical that brought world fame to Bernstein as a composer, making him a legend of pop culture and a star of American classics.
Bernstein himself considered the main component of the musical’s success to be the amazing variety of musical material. Thus, the talented graduate of the Harvard Music School combined operatic qualities in “West Side Story”: a deep orchestral structure, plot development that takes place in the musical material with recognizable notes of popular music, jazz and Latin American folklore. We offer to hear them performed by the Lviv National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Bohdan Dashak.
