The 13th Edition of the International Festival Discovering Paderewski is dedicated to figures and places related to Polish history and culture that have strong connection with the city of Lviv. Those are:

Zbigniew Herbert  – on his 100th anniversary,                                                                                                                      Adam Didur –  on his  150th anniversary,                                                                                                                          Adam Mickiewicz  – on the 120th anniversary of the opening of The Adam Mickiewicz’s Column in Lviv

The Adam Mickiewicz’s Column – one of the most recognizable symbols of modern Lviv celebrates its 120th anniversary in the year of 2024.  This monument marks as well a material contribution of Poles and Polish culture to the image of this extraordinary city. The monument was officially unveiled on October 30, 1904, and has survived undamaged to these days.

Other festival events are related to the anniversaries of two figures who made an impact on Lviv’s intellectual and artistic life and development – the 150th anniversary of Adam Didur, known as “the bass of all times”, and the 100th anniversary of Zbigniew Herbert, a multiple candidate for the Nobel Prize. These artists can undoubtedly be called titans of Polish culture.

When organizing Zbigniew Herbert’s 100th anniversary celebration, we will cooperate with the director of the National Art Gallery in Lviv named after B. Voznytsky –  Taras Wozniak, who himself is a great admirer of Herbert’s talent.  A conference titled: “Zbigniew Herbert’s Lviv and a common space for Ukrainian, Polish and Jewish culture” will gather for the discussion Ukrainian and Polish intellectuals in the imposing Potocki Palace in Lviv.  The conference will be preceded by the Statuette Gala Ceremony, during which The Paderewski Award will be handed to prominent persons, active in the Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation and cooperation. After the conference and the Paderewski Award Ceremony, the audience will be offered an exclusive stage performance of a drama called “Last Tango with Herbert” presented by famous polish author, stage director and actor Przemysław Tejkowski.

The 150th anniversary of a world-known opera star, one and only “bas of all times” Adam Didur is an excellent opportunity to organize an Opera Gala. The idea of the concert is to unite in cooperation two theatres:  The Solomia Krushelnystka National Opera and Ballet Theater in Lviv – which was “home institution” for Adam Didur for many years, and The Silesian Opera – founded by Adam Didur in 1945. The  Gala is intended to be the first act of close cooperation between two institutions that owe so much to legendary Adam Didur.
