The opening theme of the Piano Concerto in G major came to Maurice Ravel on a train between Oxford and London; its rhythms were carefully collected during a journey through America, and the premiere was to take place in Amsterdam. This time, the musicians of the Lviv National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, led by Ihor Muravyov and joined by soloist József Ormeny, will present the Concerto in Lviv. Complementing this part of the program dedicated to Ravel is a piece the composer once described as “an experiment in a very special and limited direction” — the now world-famous Boléro.
Bridging the symphonic landscapes of 20th-century France is Ravel’s younger contemporary, Ernest Chausson, who, after decades of writing smaller vocal works, surprised his peers with a large-scale orchestral piece — his one and only Symphony.
