The ensemble of the Lviv National Philharmonic will perform in Sweden on June, 9.
This program aims to demonstrate the close connection between Ukrainian and European music. The Academy of Bologna became a kind of “intersection point” for composers from different countries. In 1670, seventeen-year-old Italian Arcangelo Corelli entered the Academy. A few years later, the Ukrainians Dmytro Bortnianskyi and Maksym Berezovskyi, as well as the famous Austrian, a very young Mozart at that time, successfully passed the exams for the honorary title.
Next to their recognized compositions, the evening will feature the music of the outstanding German composer Georg Friedrich Telemann. In his time, he was even more popular than Bach, who respected Telemann for his work. Networking of European musicians formed the basis of professional success in the Baroque period. That is why the composers’ creative influences are so noticeable in this program. We will also perform works by the Italian artist Giovanni Battista Fontana, who is rightly considered one of the founders of the instrumental sonata genre. And we will be pleased to present a violin sonata by Swedish composer Olof Åhlström, which will be performed in an unusual duet between nyckelharpa and harpsichord.
The concert will conclude with a unique musical example: the chant. The genre, typical of the Ukrainian Baroque, will be reinterpreted by contemporary Ukrainian composer Bohdan Sehin. The text is based on the words “Mother of mercy, from the fierce enemy, keep me always”, which are accorded with the prayers of Ukrainians today.
