Markus Uhl

Born in 1978 Markus Uhl studied church music as well as organ, musicology and philosophy in Freiburg, Weimar, Heidelberg and Essen under the tutelage of Zsigmond Szathmáry, Hans-Michael Beuerle, Michael Kapsner and Stefan Klöckner. He obtained his doctorate in musicology with a work about the reformation of Gregorian chant after the Council of Trent.

As Bezirkskantor der Erzdiözese Freiburg Markus Uhl is responsible for the church music in the region around Heidelberg. He is Director of Music at the Jesuitenkirche Heidelberg. In this function he plays the organ und conducts several ensembles such as Cappella Palatina, Arnolt-Schlick-Ensemble, Schola Cantorum and project choirs for children and families.

He teaches at several Universities of Music such as Stuttgart, Weimar and Heidelberg in the subjects organ, organ improvisation and Gregorian chant.

He has received several prizes and awards at international competitions in the fields of choral conducting, organ, organ improvisation and musicology. Recently he got the honorary title Kirchenmusikdirektor (KMD).
