Bohdan Sehin — composer, music projects manager

General information

Bohdan Sehin was born in 1976 in Borshchiv, Ternopil region, Ukraine. From 1991 to 1994, he studied “piano” and “music theory” at the Solomiia Krushelnytska Ternopil State Music School, as well as composition with Bohdan Klymchuk.

Bohdan Sehin graduated from the Lviv Lysenko National Music Academy in 1999, the internship assistantship in 2002. His teacher in composition was Myroslav Skoryk.

He was consulting on the compositional issues with Oleksandr Shchetynsky, Jeff Beer, Arvo Pärt, Beat Furrer and Yuval Shaked.

Laureate of the Levko Revutskyi Prize (2004) and the Borys Liatoshynskyi Prize (2019). He has been a two-time participant (2003, 2006) in the “Gaude Polonia” scholarship program sponsored by the Polish Ministry of Culture and has studied composition with Zbigniew Bujarski in Krakow and Zygmunt Krauze in Warsaw; a scholarship recipient of the “Warsaw Autumn Friends Foundation” (2003); received a scholarship of “Andrzej Szczypiorski’s Association of Support for Creative Arts” of the Association of Authors ZAiKS (Poland, 2014); and a “Gulliver Connect” (2008), and “Ukrainian Presidential” (2008-2010) grant recipient. Winner of the 2nd prize at the Sergei Prokofiev International Composer Competition (Mariupol, 2000), the 2nd prize at the All-Ukrainian Competition of Young Artists “StART” (2003) and the 1st prize of the Second All-Ukrainian Competition of Composers for the best choral work within the project “Mykola Leontovych’s Choral Assemblies” (2011). Scholar of the Kyiv City Mayor (2011).  He has composed works commissioned by “Institute of Music and Dance” (Poland), “Polish Institute in Kyiv”, “Deutsche Welle” (Germany).

Multiple awards for both composition and theatrical work in Ukraine, Poland and Bulgaria.

Featuring symphonic, choral, and chamber works, as well as music for theatrical productions, Sehin’s music has been performed for audiences in Belarus, Armenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Poland, France, Switzerland, Germany, China and Ukraine. Sehin is a member of the Ukrainian National Composers Union with broad experience in arts-festival management, including the “Contrasts” International Festival of Contemporary Music (Lviv, 1998-2006), “Velvet Curtain” (Lviv, 2006), “Kyiv Music Fest” (Kyiv, 2009), and the International “Music of Youth Forum” (Kyiv, 2009, 2011, 2013).

Since 2009, Bohdan has been working on numerous art projects in Ukraine. 2009 was also the year when he began coordinating projects for the “Ensemble Nostri Temporis”, becoming its director the following year. He is also the founder and artistic director of the first in Ukraine International Master Classes of New Music COURSE (taking place every year since 2012) and “The Ukrainian Biennale for New Music”. Since 2012, he is the Commercial Director of the Development of New Music at the Myroslav Skoryk Lviv National Philharmonic and the Art Director of the “Contrasts” International Contemporary Music Festival.

In 2019, he launched a regular concert series “Pro et Contra. A New Music Scene” at the Lviv National Philharmonic. In 2020, he initiated and implemented the anti-crisis project “Sounds of the Lviv Philharmonic”. The project took place in 2020 and 2021 and included more than 100 online broadcasts of concerts at the Lviv National Philharmonic. In 2022, Bohdan Sehin started a series of digital concerts “Ukraine-2022. Muses Are Not Silent” on Myroslav Skoryk Lviv National Philharmonic’s YouTube channel in support of Ukrainian musicians who stayed in Ukraine during the russian armed aggression.
