General information

Oleh Bezborodko is a ukrainian pianist and composer, musicologist and educator. His works have been performed throughout the world: from the United States to China. Born in Kyiv, he graduated with distinction from the Ukrainian National Academy of Music (piano class of Iya Pavlova). Mr. Bezborodko attended the Conservatoire de Neuchâtel in Switzerland (class of Sylviane Deferne) where he obtained Prix de virtuosité avec distinction in piano performance. Also he took lessons from such distinguished pianists as Paul Badura-Skoda, Norma Fisher, Charles Rosen, Joan Havill, Naoum Starkman, Halina Czerny-Stefańska. After returning from abroad Mr. Bezborodko took up a teaching piano position at his Alma Mater and at the same time entered its composition department to study with Hennadii Lyashenko (composition) and Levko Kolodub (orchestration). In 2010 he obtained a Ph.D. degree from the Ukrainian National Academy of Music and now holds a post of full-time professor (piano as principal instrument and piano pedagogy) there.

Both as pianist and composer Mr. Bezborodko cooperated with all major Ukrainian orchestras and such renowned conductors as Andrzej Bauer, Andrey Boreyko, Hobart Earle, Roman Kofman, Kirill Karabits, Bohodar Kotorovych, Volodymyr Kozhukhar, Viktor Ploskina, Natalia Ponomarchuk, Volodymyr Sirenko, Natalia Stets. Prizewinner of national and international piano competitions and scholarships, Mr. Bezborodko is in high demand as an interpreter of contemporary music and as a chamber musician. He performed and premiered piano and chamber works of almost all major contemporary Ukrainian composers (Almashi, Bibik, Hodzyatskyi, Ishchenko, Karabyts, Polyova, Silvestrov, Stankovych, Shchetynskyi and many others). In 2020 Naxos Records released the premiere recording of the Piano Concertino by Valentin Silvestrov performed by Oleh Bezborodko with the Lithuanian National Orchestra conducted by Christopher Lyndon-Gee. Bezborodko’s interpretation of Silvestov music is one of the most successful according to the composer himself.

In 2008 the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture awarded Oleh Bezborodko with the Levko Revutskyi Music Prize. In 2017 he obtained the Mykola Lysenko Composition Award. During the season 2019-2020 Mr. Bezborodko served as a composer-in-residence at the National Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2023 Mr. Bezborodko is the Artistic Director of the festival “Kyiv Music Premieres”.
