Paul Gaugler – tenor (FR)

General information

Paul Gaugler studied at the Strasbourg Conservatory, his native town, and graduated at the Paris National Superior Conservatory for Music and Dance. Afterwards he joined the Academies of Ambronay and Royaumont. Winner of Vincenzo Bellini and Armel Opera competitions, he made his debut as Duca di Mantova from Rigoletto (Pilsen Opera, Szeged National Theater).

He recreates the heroic title role Dante (1890) by Benjamin Godard (Saint-Étienne Opera house). He sings Pollione from Norma (Chisinau National Opera). He is Faust from La Damnation de Faust (Glyndebourne Festival cover; Compiègne Imperial Theater). He sings Bacchus from Ariadne auf Naxos (Royaumont). He performs Boris from Kat’a Kabanova (European tour, awarded Best Lyrical Production by the Professional Critics Union). He is Don José from Carmen (Lviv National Opera, Saint-Paul-de-Vence Festival, Cluny Festival, Yaounde Congress Palace), Hoffmann from Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Nuits du Mont Rome Festival); Gounod’s Faust (La Seine Musicale, Paris; Poznan Opera House); Siegfried in an adaptation of the Ring (Reims Opéra House, Athénée Théâtre Louis-Jouvet, Paris). He is Janik, hero of Janacek’s Diary of the One who Disappeared (Arcal tour, Île-de-France Festival) and Harlekin from Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Aix-en-Provence Grand Theater).

He also sang: Tamino from Die Zauberflöte (Cannes Palace of Festivals); Octavio in L’Europe galante (Ambronay Festival, Vichy, Besançon, San Sebastián opera houses); Thésée from Ariane by Massenet (Louvre Oratoire, Paris); Spakos from Cléopâtre by Massenet (Salle Cortot, Paris); Junger Diener from Elektra and Ganiet from Demon by Rubinstein (Bordeaux national opera house); Brabantischer Edler from Lohengrin (Montpellier national opera house); Heinrich der Schreiber from Tannhäuser (Rouen opera house). He creates opera roles: Victor from Guru by Laurent Petitgirard (Szczecin opera house); Charles/Selim from Les Sacrifiées by Thierry Pécou (Arcal tour, Rouen, Massy, Reims opera houses…).

In concert, he sings Verdi’s Requiem and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (Saint-Etienne Opera house); Stravinsky’s Threni (Bastille opera amphitheater); as well as recitals and galas (Lviv National Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Bastia opera house, Institute of France, Bordeaux national opera house, etc.).

Paul Gaugler has worked with conductors: Sylvain Cambreling, William Christie, Paul Daniel, Mihhail Gerts, David Molard-Soriano, Laurent Petitgirard, Rudolf Piehlmayer, David Reiland, Michael Schønwandt and stage directors: Dmitry Bertman, Alain Bézu, David Bobée, André Engel, Christian Gangneron, Louise Moaty, Jean-Romain Vesperini, Justin Way, etc.

Passionate about teaching, Paul Gaugler is invited as a language (French) and vocal coach. Also he is regularly invited as a jury in conservatories and competitions.

​​Paul Gaugler also records for the cinema, with the soundtrack of the film Ténor by Claude Zidi Jr., composed by Laurent Pérez del Mar; release in 2022.

Regularly he participates in humanitarian musical projects (Council of Europe; CALMS-Les Voix solidaires; UNESCO etc.).
