Austrian Bass-baritone Rupert Bergmann was born in 1965 in Graz, Austria. He studied at the Academy of Music in Graz and made his professional debut at the Opera House in Graz in 1990. He has appeared with many Austrian opera companies and has performed at many festivals and toured throughout Europe, US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Chile and Japan. Rupert has performed over 70 roles and being specialized in contemporary music Rupert participated in many world premieres like „Heute Abend Boris Godunow“ by Ukrainian composer Karmella Tsepkolenko. Since 1997 he often has been a guest of the Festival 2days2nights of New Music in Odessa, Ukraine and has performed in many Ukrainian venues including the Kyiv National Opera and the Lviv Philharmonia and Lviv Opera and in Donetsk Opera. He has also performed a lot of operetta and musical roles like Tevye in „The Fiddler On The Roof“. Rupert presents Lied recitals and since a couple of years he focuses on works inspired by Jewish and Christian spirituality and is cantor at a franciscan monastery and church. His 2021 opera-video-film-project „Pain and Salvation of Job“ with the Odessa festival can be seen on his YouTube Channel LayFraCantor. Rupert is friends with many Ukrainian musicians and artists and is deeply shocked and saddened by the events of March 2022.
