General information

Sergiy Magera was born on May 18, 1972 in the town of Zolochiv, Lviv Region. In 1997 he graduated from the High State Institute of Music named after M. Lysenko in Lviv.

He performed in the Lviv State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after Solomiya Krushelnytska. Since 1998 he has been a soloist at The National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine named after Taras Shevchenko in Kyiv.

His repertoire includes the roles of Yaroslav Mudryy (Yaroslav the Wise) from the opera “Yaroslav Mudryy” by H. Maiboroda; Moses (“Moses” by M. Skoryk); Ivan Karas’ (opera “Zaporozhets za Dunayem” / “A Cossack Beyond the Danube” by S. Hulak-Artemovskyy); Borys, Pimen, Kum (opera “Borys Godunov”, “The Fair at Sorochyntsi” by M. Mussorgsky); Sobkin (opera “The Tsar’s Bride” by M. Rimsky-Korsakov); Prince Gremin, Kochubey (opera “Eugene Onegin”, opera “Mazepa” by P. Tchaikovsky); King of Clubs (opera “The Love for Three Oranges” by S. Prokofiev); Raimondo Bidebent, Dr Dulcamara (“Lucia di Lammermoor”, “L’elisir d’amore” by G. Donizetti); Colline, Timur (“La Bohème”, “Turandot” by G. Puccini); Basilio (“The Barber of Seville” by G. Rossini); Orovezo (“Norma” by V. Bellini); Ferrando, Zaccaria, Monterone, Banco, Ramfis, Philippe II (Il trovatore”, “Nabucco”, “Rigoletto”, “Macbeth”, “Aida”, “Don Carlos” by G. He is an awardee of numerous Prizes: Wagner Scholar (1995), First Prize at Prokofiev All-Ukrainian Competition (1995, Mariupol, Ukraine); Grand Prix of the Monteverdi International Singing Competition (1996, Ragusa, Italy); First Prize and “Golden Hope of Ukraine” Award at the Patorzhynsky International Singing Competition (1997, Luhansk, Ukraine); First Prize at the Alchevsky International Singing Competition (1999, Kharkiv, Ukraine); Second Prize and “Authentic Perormance of M. Glinka” Award at the Glinka International Singing Competition (Kazan, Tatarstan); First Prize at the International Opera Singers Competition for the best performance of Capuleti in Gounod’s “Romeo and Juliet” (2000, Budapest, Hungary); Second Prize at the Maria Callas International Singing Competition (2001, the Athens, Greece); First Prize and the Audience Award at the Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition (2002, Andorra); First Prize at the International “Citta di Alcamo” Singing Competition (2002, Alcamo, Italy); First Prize at the 9th International Singing Competition (2002, Bilbao, Spain); Second Prize at the 5th Marie Kraja International Singing Competition (Tirana, Albania).

Sergiy Magera is awarded with the Honorary Diploma of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts for his professional mastership (action “The Art of the Young – 2001”).

In 2004 he was awarded with the title of the Merited (Performing) Artist of Ukraine for the considerable personal contribution in the development of the Ukrainian theatrical arts, exceptional creative achievements and high professionalism.

In 2009 Sergiy Magera was awarded with the title of “People’s Artist of Ukraine”. In 2011 he was awarded with the Shevchenko National Prize.

He is decorated with “The Star of Italy” Order (2016), Order “For Merits III degree” (2017).

He regularly took part in the concerts “Voices of Montserrat Caballé” by the invitation of Montserrat Caballé.

In 2018 he performed under the direction of the outstanding conductor – Maestro Riccardo Muti – in the international project “The Roads of Friendship”.

Sergiy Magera has set on tours around the USA, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, Portugal, the Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Japan and many other countries.
