Brave and courageous “Šárka”, a viola concerto, was once considered one of the most important examples of the genre; captivating and imaginative “Ukrainian Poem” that was written as the dedication to Taras Shevchenko — these and other pieces will make up the program of the concert “My Homeland”. It will consist of symphonic music by composers from three European countries. The works will be performed by the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine under the direction of Viktor Ploskina.

“Šárka” is the third piece in the set of symphonic poems “My Motherland” by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana. Each poem is inspired by Czech history, legends and landscapes. The author himself spoke about the mood and content of the third part, which will be played this evening: “The composition is based on the legend of the girl Šárka. The poem begins with a story about an angry girl who swears revenge on all men because of her lover’s betrayal. Šárka ties herself to a tree and waits for Prince Ctirad to save her, deceiving him that she is a prisoner of the rebel women. The prince falls in love with the girl and releases her. Šárka offers him and his companions a mead with a sleeping potion, and when they fall asleep, she signals the hunting horn. Other women come and kill all the men — that’s how the symphonic poem ends.”

The Viola concerto by English composer William Walton was first performed in 1929 at London’s Queen’s Hall by Paul Hindemith as a soloist. The famous German violist and composer performed with the Symphony Orchestra of Henry Wood under the author’s direction. Almost instantly, this composition was recognized as one of the brightest and most important examples of the genre, and young Walton was called a “musical genius”. Tobias Roth will perform in the Lviv concert.
The musical evening will continue with “Ukrainian Poem” for violin and orchestra by Yevhen Stankovych. The composition exposes to the listener the diverse world of emotional depth and impassioned lyrics of the author. Here the peace is combined with intense rhapsody, incredibly beautiful folklore elements and arias. We will hear the violin solo performed by Ihor Muraviov.

The Suite from music to the film “Taras Shevchenko” by Borys Liatoshynskyi will complete the philharmonic event. The composer wrote the music for the film, which was released in 1951 (director — Ihor Savchenko). Despite total censorship, Liatoshynskyi managed to portray the image of the Ukrainian poet in many ways with the help of folk songs based on the poet’s words, including “My Thoughts”, “My Testament”, “The Wide Dnipro Roars and Moans”, and in the finale, he used the melody of the famous Ukrainian carol.

“Ukraine–2022. Muses Are Not Silent” is a series of digital concerts organized by Myroslav Skoryk Lviv National Philharmonic in support of Ukrainian musicians during the russian armed aggression. Online concerts will become a platform for the uniting of the Ukrainian music community, as many musicians participating in these concert programs have become internally displaced people and have found shelter in Lviv.

We provide a free opportunity for the whole world to watch concerts on the official YouTube channel of the Lviv National Philharmonic. At the same time, we suggest our listeners from abroad make charitable donations to Ukrainian musicians who have stayed here in Ukraine.
