The legendary Ukrainian violinist has turned 80!

On June, 1, the famous Ukrainian violinist Oleh Krysa celebrated his 80th anniversary.

“During 30 years of teaching, I have not encountered a musical personality such as his. Oleh has brilliant natural gifts, unusual musicality, vivid artistry and great charm.”, David Oistrakh said about his favourite student.

After spending his childhood and school years in Lviv, the violinist made his American debut at Carnegie Hall in 1971. The performance was described by The New York Times as a performance that could “a performance to make a violinist’s reputation had he come without one”. The violinist has been living in the United States for almost 30 years. Since 1988, he is a Professor at the Ukrainian Institute of Music in the United States (New York), Professor at the Eastman School of Music (Conservatory) at the University of Rochester.

For decades, the violinist’s creative path is closely linked with his native city Lviv: it is here that he has repeatedly performed a variety of concert programs, and it is here in 2013 that the musician launched the Oleh Krysa International Violin Competition, which takes place there every three years.

On June 16, the jubilarian will perform with the Lviv National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine under the direction of Taras Krysa, a famous American-Ukrainian conductor and violinist’s son.

The program of the evening will include Maksym Berezovskyi‘s Symphony in C major, Felix Mendelssohn‘s famous Violin Concerto, as well as a symbolic musical tandem of works “The Unanswered Question” by American composer Charles Ives and Violin Concerto No. 5  “The Unanswered Question” by Yevhen Stankovych, written especially for the 75th anniversary of the outstanding Ukrainian violinist.

“Ukraine–2022. Muses Are Not Silent” is a series of digital chamber concerts organized by Myroslav Skoryk Lviv National Philharmonic in support of Ukrainian musicians during the russian armed aggression. Online concerts will become a platform for the uniting of the Ukrainian music community, as many musicians participating in these concert programs have become internally displaced people and have found shelter in Lviv.

We provide a free opportunity for the whole world to watch concerts on the official YouTube channel of the Lviv National Philharmonic. At the same time, we suggest our listeners from abroad make charitable donations to Ukrainian musicians who have stayed here in Ukraine.
