CHARITABLE HELP FOR UKRAINIAN MUSICIANS: https://philharmonia.lviv.ua/en/media…

The concert program represents chamber music traditions, ingrained in both European and Ukrainian cultures. However, not only a hundred years divide the selected works, but also the abyss of fate. Schubert’s “Trout Quintet” is at the forefront of the repertoire of various artists around the world. On the other hand, Barvinsky’s Variations are still less known, not only abroad, but also in Ukraine. Thanks to the online live stream, the Festival seeks to promote worthy Ukrainian examples of chamber music and raise knowledge about them. After all, Barvinskyi’s work was written in Prague and got immediately praised by his contemporaries, becoming a regular part of local concert programs. At first, it existed only in manuscript form, but in 1940 the material was lost. Only after returning from the Mordovian political labour camp, the composer was able to resurrect the musical text. However, he was not fated to complete this work — after Barvinskyi’s death, another prominent contemporary, Stanislav Lyudkevych, added the last measures of the Sextet. Some variations in his Sextet have titles — “Scherzo” (second variation), “Lirnyky” (third variation), “Dumka” (fifth) and the final — “Kolomyika”. These names already have a strong connection with traditions, folk instruments, songs and dances. The author’s theme, which is the basis of the cycle, is also based on the features of the Ukrainian melody. At the same time, Schubert’s romantic music is also close to Austrian and German folk songs in its form and simple, delicate melody. It recreates the image of fragile beauty, and harmony between man and nature. The elegant accompaniment emphasizes the dancing spirit of the piece. After a brief minor eclipse, joyful song phrases return, symbolizing the happy ending of the story.
