Contrasts 29. Barvinskyi & Skoryk

Lviv is a city that history has chosen to intersect paths and destinies, where legends and memories of its heroes and geniuses live on the streets. The land that cherishes the memories of the philharmonic patron Myroslav Skoryk and the phoenix of Ukrainian music, Vasyl Barvinskyi. Without their music, it is hard to imagine the Contrasts festival, which featured the return of Vasyl Barvinskyi’s works and Myroslav Skoryk’s premieres.

This evening, Ukrainian musicians come together to recreate Lviv in the years of Barvinskyi and Skoryk. Friendly meetings in the Barvinsky house were accompanied by the composer’s works written in the same estate. They were performed by both the composer himself and his wife, the pianist Natalia Pului, and listened to by the best artists, scholars, and public figures of pre-repressive Ukraine. These works reveal Barvinsky’s talent as a composer of chamber music, and his mastery of timbres and colors of music.

The works by Myroslav Skoryk that will continue the concert are part of another, subsequent era. Most of them were composed during the period of independence, when the composer worked at the Lviv National Philharmonic. The program of the fourth concert of the festival is a dialogue between the two artists through the prism of performance by young and talented Ukrainian musicians, new soloists of the Philharmonic: violinist Nataliia Gordieieva, cellist Maksym Rymar and pianist Violina Petrychenko. For Maksym Rymar it will be his debut as a Philharmonic soloist!
