The monumental composition, which has always been in the repertoire of the Lviv National Philharmonic during Holy Week, will be displayed in a new context. It seems that this Holy Week of the Ukrainian people has been going on for three months. And here the music will be an expression of pain from the losses of the war — “Mother of Sorrows stood at the True Cross, mourning the death of her crucified Son …” — Ukrainian muses hope that art heals. Thanks to its power, one can undergo grief and find peace for the soul.
This music is also notable for the fact that it was written by a 25-year-old man. Achieving popularity through his operas, Pergolesi turned to sacred music. He worked on “Stabat Mater” in a monastery until the last days of his life, and after his death, the work was not instantly recognized for its innovative nature. Today, we have the opportunity to appreciate the greatness of spirit and touching lyrics, finalized in 13 solo and duet numbers of the composition.
