In times of war, we understand more than ever the importance of preserving our history and art. Lviv, a city of great artists and rich cultural traditions, has always been the musical heart of Galicia. It was here that Vasyl Barvinskyi, one of the most prominent Lviv composers, created his works. His life was full of success and inspiration, but a cruel verdict of fate cut short everything he worked on: decades in the camps and the loss of manuscripts that were destroyed by the Soviet authorities.

Barvinskyi’s story has always amazed and inspired me, so I strive to make his music known not only in Europe, where I have already recorded discs with his works, but also in Lviv, where, in my opinion, his music is still not often enough heard at concerts.

Today, we must direct all our efforts to ensure that Ukrainian music sounds and takes a worthy place in cultural life. That is why I am initiating a series of concerts “Barvinskyi Invites”, where Barvinskyi’s music will become the central element of each program. Musicians will have the opportunity to add works by other composers, but on condition that they find a connection with the life or work of Barvinskyi, thus forming their own concept. An important element will also be conversations about the composer’s life, key events in the life of the city, his contemporaries, etc.

This series will be chamber, with a special atmosphere, as if we had gathered in Barvinskyi’s living room. I invite those who appreciate our history and want to preserve it to these concerts.

It is especially pleasant for me to open this series of concerts on the composer’s birthday – February 20. It is planned that such concerts will be held once every two months; accordingly, the next concert will be in April. It is important to me that different musicians perform at these concerts. I strive to create a space where talented students can perform alongside experienced colleagues, growing as musicians and individuals.

The first concert will feature chamber works by Vasyl Barvinskyi, and we will also invite another birthday boy, Levko Revutskyi, to his living room, who is also celebrating his birthday today. The concert will feature the Phoenix String Quartet and soprano Sofia Soloviy.
