A monumental work that has always been part of the Lviv National Philharmonic’s repertoire during Holy Week. For the Ukrainian people, Holy Week has not ended for over three years now. And here, music becomes the voice of grief over the losses of war — “The Sorrowful Mother stood by the Cross, weeping for the Death of her crucified Son…” — Ukrainian muses believe that art heals. Through its power, we can endure sorrow and find peace for the soul.

This piece is also notable for having been composed by a 25-year-old young man. After gaining popularity for his operas, Pergolesi turned to sacred music. He worked on Stabat Mater until his final days in a monastery, and the work was not immediately recognized after his death due to its innovative nature. Today, descendants can appreciate the grandeur of spirit and touching lyricism embodied in the 13 solo and duet movements of the composition.
