“Stabat Mater” by Welsh artist Karl Jenkins is a composition for symphony orchestra, choir and two soloists, based on the medieval Catholic hymn “Stabat Mater”.

In this work, Jenkins combined traditional Western music (orchestral and choral) with folk instruments and songs, focusing on the music of the Middle East.

Unlike most arrangements, the Welsh composer’s work uses not only the original Latin text, but also text from other sources. These include: “Ave verum”, “Lament”, a poem by the composer’s wife Carol Barrett, and another one, “Incantation”, which has to be partially performed in ancient Arabic. Jenkins also uses two poems – a poem by Rumi and an excerpt from “The Epic of Gilgamesh” translated into English and Aramaic.

The particular feature of another part, entitled “And the Mother did weep”, is the fact that its entire text consists of the same phrase, performed in different languages-English, Latin, Greek, Aramaic, and Hebrew.
