Program

Traditionally, the festival opens with a virtuoso organ programme performed by the festival director, one of the leading Ukrainian organists, soloist of the Lviv National Philharmonic Olena Matseliukh. She will be joined on the stage of the Liudkevych Concert Hall by pianist and organist Olha Striletska.

“Te Deum” is the name of one of the most famous Christian prayers in the world, a praise to the Lord. A prayer that has invariably filled people’s souls with peace and gratitude for centuries. One of the most famous artists of his generation, the Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, addresses it in his music. Vasks’ music is minimalist and meditative, and he conveys deep sacred meanings in a contemporary compositional language.

The concert will continue with works that are also based on sacred music, and chorales. Their exquisite sound on the organ and piano will give a sense of harmony and joyful exaltation.

“Unity in diversity”

Lviv is a city that combines a variety of European features, adoring its homeland. Despite the criminal actions of the enemy and thanks to the protection of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the city continues its artistic life. This year, for the eighth time, the Myroslav Skoryk Lviv National Philharmonic is hosting the VIII International Summertime Festival “Pizzicato e Cantabile”. Its founder and director has always been the renowned Ukrainian organist Olena Matseliukh.

The name of the festival “Pizzicato e Cantabile” refers to two opposite techniques of playing musical instruments – sharp plucking of strings and smooth melody. Every musician knows these words because it is through their combination that beautiful music is born.

This year’s Pizzicato e Cantabile festival also aims to unite, and the best slogan for this is “Unity in Diversity” – the slogan of the European Union. Because the ability to unite people for a common goal has now become the most important function of culture.

Therefore, at the festival, Ukrainian music will not be disconnected from European music, it will be performed not only by Ukrainian musicians, but also by our friends who have come to support Ukraine, and the hall will be filled with the sound of the world’s most famous sampled organ of Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral.

All of this, as well as many surprises, are combined in nine concerts of the Pizzicato e Cantabile festival. See you at the Lviv National Philharmonic.
