The concert program will feature music by two great romantics – Felix Mendelssohn and Peter Tchaikovsky. The octet for strings by Es Dur Mendelssohn is an example of the sensuality of chamber music by a German master. Interestingly, Robert Schumann once praised Mendelssohn’s work, calling it “Mozart of the XIX century.” Octet in E flat major, written by the composer at a young age – young Felix was about to turn 17. And these charms of youth and freedom of feeling frame a musical canvas.
The romantic theme of the concert will be continued by Tchaikovsky’s work, filled with drama and expression. “Souvenir de Florence” is a tribute to the composer of charming Florence, where the artist often came. The famous Villa Bonciani became Tchaikovsky’s home in Florence, and the Tuscany region itself was another inspiration for fruitful work. The sextet was written in the last years of the composer’s life, in it you can hear Italian echoes of long cantilenas. But together with the Florentine charm, it is a dramatic work with sensual tension.
After all, following Mendelssohn’s advice, music should not be described in words, because “so much is said about music, and so little is said.” And how appropriate Tchaikovsky’s words sound: “Where words are powerless, there is a more eloquent language in its armor – music.”
